The 5th of December is the International Volunteer Day (IVD) proclaimed by the United Nations to promote volunteerism, and to encourage governments and organisations to pay tribute to volunteers in recognition of their contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Since 1992, AVS has been celebrating the IVD annually to show appreciation to volunteers, and to encourage more aspiring ones to adopt the volunteering way of life.
International Volunteer Year 2026
In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly announced that 2026 will be designated as the "International Volunteer Year" (IVY 2026). This marks a significant global resolution in the field of volunteer service, following the International Volunteer Year (IVY) in 2000.
IVY 2026 presents an excellent opportunity to strengthen worldwide awareness of the power and potential of volunteers, promote increased engagement in volunteer activities, and encourage governments and other stakeholders to make concrete commitments to support volunteer participation through favorable policy environments. It aims to highlight the importance of volunteers in achieving global sustainable development.
You are welcome to participate in the following activities:
1. Pledge to Support the "Hong Kong Volunteer Charter"
To promote quality volunteer services, AVS established the "Hong Kong Volunteer Charter" in 2011, while advocating the value of voluntary work, it also helps individuals interested in volunteering understand the responsibilities and code of conduct that volunteers should uphold.
Based on the "Hong Kong Volunteer Charter," AVS has developed a "Practical Reference Guide," tailored to different volunteer roles. It includes detailed guidelines for voluntary work and outlines the expectations of volunteers towards organizations and service recipients.
